A woman injured a friend when she hit a gas pump after losing control of her car when entering a gas station.

Leicester graduate Adekemi Oyekanmi had returned to the city to celebrate her 23rd birthday with her college friends, a court has heard.

But as they headed south along Lubbesthorpe Road, Oyekanmi decided to stop for gas.

She entered Esso station near Meridian Park in Braunstone Town, hit a sidewalk and lost control before hitting one of the pumps, bouncing off a metal bollard and crashing into a car in the stop.

One of his friends was injured and Oyekanmi was later charged with careless and careless driving.

At Leicester Magistrates’ Court on Thursday she pleaded guilty and was sentenced.

Prosecutor Frances Love told the court: “The accused was driving with passengers in the car to go to Go Ape in Coventry.

“She needed fuel. All of a sudden, the accused walked into the gas station without warning.

“She collided with a bollard attached to the ground next to a gas pump and a parked car.

“CCTV footage shows the car spinning at high speed and colliding with a curb before hitting the pump, then bouncing into the second car.

“The windshield shattered and a passenger sustained muscle damage which required physiotherapy.”

Defending herself, Oyekanmi, of Landsdowne Road, Yaxley, near Peterborough, who has never been convicted, said: “I had to refuel.

“I felt the car slip and hit something that made me panic and hit the pump.”

She said she had been driving for five years without any previous incidents, adding: “I really apologize for the damage I have caused.”

She was fined £ 246 and ordered to pay a victim fine surcharge of £ 34 and court costs of £ 85.

She also had six points written on her driver’s license.
