On Wednesday, two men died in a fire at Chibyno gas station along Alaoji – Ikot-Ekpene road in Obingwa LGA of Abia State.
According to Aba firefighters, the incident occurred in the morning.
Belenta Belenta, the service’s Aba zone commander, said he suspected the victims were involved in oil bunkering which may have informed the spill of petroleum products at the station in the early hours of the day.
He said more than five trucks were consumed by the fire which was caused by an explosion at the site of the incident.
He said police attended the scene to take the body of one of the crash victims to the morgue.
Belenta said the other victim, who suffered severe burns and was taken to hospital, was also reported dead.
Another witness, who identified himself as Nnamdi, said he lived in the area and was woken by calls around 5 a.m. to go to the scene of the fire.
“Very early this morning around 5am, people called me to tell me that there was a fire at a nearby gas station called Chibyno Filling Station on the Ikot-Ekpene / Alaoji road,” a- he declared.
“We called the fire brigade who came to the scene which had snowballed into a very large blaze which covered the entire service station.
“The gas station had four trucks unloading fuel at the same time.
“We learned there was a small spark from the generator set they were using to pump fuel into their tank, which caused an explosion.”
