OMV opens its first unmanned gas station in Austria

The new OMV Fastlane concept is completely unstaffed and includes fresh pizza and a full convenience store.

OMV has launched Austria’s first unmanned, contactless and fully digitalized gas station and convenience store. In cooperation with start-up BistroBox and self-service food distributor UNIBox, the first “OMV Fastlane” opened at an existing Avanti location in Linz.

The new self-service concept allows users to refuel and shop seamlessly and without human interaction. Over 1,000 convenience items, hot snacks such as fresh stone-baked pizza and coffee are available. All purchase actions are contactless and managed digitally via touchscreens and apps.

“We see our role in local sourcing for people becoming more and more important. This applies in particular to regions where the infrastructure for gastronomy or food distribution is less developed. With our OMV Fastlane, we are already opening the service station of tomorrow. , which meets customers’ needs as a multi-service hub and offers even more flexibility and independence,” says Gernot Gollner, Head of OMV’s Service Station Business in Austria.

The key partner for the new site is BistroBox and its 24-hour pizzeria concept. The company brings its experience from the operation of some 40 other sites in Austria.”

“Via a touch screen, customers can cook a fresh pizza themselves in the oven in just two minutes, as well as snacks, drinks, freshly ground coffee and tobacco products. In addition, there is also a small sitting and standing area for immediate consumption,” explains BistroBox co-founder and managing director Klaus Haberl.

Another strong cooperation partner is UNIBox, part of the Upper Austrian Unimarkt Group – they manage the store section of the site. “By registering via an app, customers have access to this part of the store, where they will find a varied range of more than 900 products for their daily purchases, including high-quality organic products”, explains Andreas Haider, from Unimarkt group.

The Austrian energy company OMV is already planning another OMV Fastlane site with BistroBox and UNIBox in Graz. The intention is to continue to extend the concept to the rest of Austria.

OMV operates approximately 2,100 service stations in ten European countries.
