Explosion at Abia gas station kills two

An early morning fire at the Chibyno gas station along the Alaoji-Ikot-Ekpene road in Obingwa local government area in Abia killed two people.

Aba Fire Department Zone Commander Belenta Belenta told reporters that more than five trucks were destroyed by the fire caused by an explosion.

Mr Belenta, who spoke about the scene, said he suspected the victims were involved in oil bunkering, which may have informed the spill of petroleum products at the station in the early hours of the day.

He said his men were made aware of the incident in the early hours of Wednesday, prompting them to attend the scene, where they used every tactic to put out the fire.

He added that the police had come to the scene to take the body of one of the victims of the accident who died immediately at the morgue.

Mr Belenta added that the other victim who was rushed to hospital was later pronounced dead.

A witness, who went by the name Nnamdi, said he lived in the area and was woken up by calls around 5 a.m. to come to the station.

“The gas station had four trucks unloading fuel at the same time. We learned that there was a small spark coming from the generator they were using to pump fuel into their tank, which caused an explosion,” he said.

Police spokesman Geoffrey Ogbonna did not respond to requests for comment on the incident.
