First Iberian gas station operator Galp has opened Europe’s first fully self-contained gas station convenience store in Lisbon as the idea of Amazon Go spreads to the retail sector.
Working with leading stand-alone technology provider Sensei, the gasoline retailer has created a 323-square-foot stand-alone convenience store, offering a number of non-perishable goods, food, snacks and beverages to customers,
Using a network of ceiling-mounted cameras and sensors in shelves to detect items shoppers pick or leave, the standalone software creates and tracks each person’s virtual shopping bag and automatically loads them through the Galp app, with credit card payments soon to follow, right out of the store. Customers no longer need to scan or wait in line to pay for their treats.
Based on Sensei’s “Plug & Play: Autonomous Pod”, an autonomous concept, which allows ultra-fast deployment and maximum flexibility, the mobile convenience store was installed and operational in just a few days. The module is open to customers from 8 a.m. to midnight daily, with 24/7 access becoming available next month.
Teresa Abecasis, Board Member and COO of Galp, says, “We are delighted to launch this collaboration with Sensei for our clients. This new stand-alone, mobile and street-facing module allows us to offer more to people passing through the street or stopping at the train station for food, allowing them to easily buy take-out meals, snacks, beverages and other products. and the speed that only self-driving technology provides while avoiding queues caused by fuel shoppers.
“We also look forward to capitalizing on the data Sensei has captured that will help us improve the store even further by implementing a highly efficient replenishment operation and offering the most attractive products for each specific location. For example; this store fully self-contained will allow small gas stations in low traffic locations to offer non-fuel products to customers through a cost-effective operation.”
Vasco Portugal, CEO of Sensei, comments: “This is an incredibly exciting time for Sensei and we are proud to lead the way for autonomous innovation in Europe in areas where people will truly benefit every day. The recently opened Gas Station Convenience Store is a shining example of how we have expanded our reach beyond supplying bespoke stand-alone stores for large grocers to now also offering modular “Plug & Play” pods. and mobiles that can be easily adapted to any retail business. Needs. We are delighted to be pioneering this concept in Europe with Galp. It is also the first of many gas stores and service stations that we look forward to launching with various partners in the coming months. »
This latest announcement continues Sensei’s trend for autonomous retail firsts, following the launch of Europe’s first fully autonomous retail store over 1,600 square feet with Sonae’s Continente brand in May 2021. The technology provider’s recent research showing that the majority of Brits (70%) want to have a self-contained retail experience when shopping, the UK market can undoubtedly expect more innovation to come to their High Street.
